LAST MEETING

Notes

  • Nick presided in Reno's absence.
  • Reno and Callie volunteered at the Food Bank of the Rockies on 9/29
  • Dick reports that the SHRED Event has been canceled due to a security guard requirement that was not budgeted. New locations are being considered.
  • Lance informed us that Lucy is back to coordinating the Open Arms Thanksgiving event next month.Unfortunately her river boat trip in Europe has been canceled due to low water in the region.
  • Nick continues to work on the  Pints for Polio event. The Denver Beer Co. has not been responsive so he is reaching out to 2 other breweries.
  • Bill reported club balances: $2,934 in the administrative account, $10,653 in the foundation account and $11,500 in our special projects. He recently attended the district treasurers meeting and was able to get some information on interest bearing accounts. A decision on opening one for our club was tabled for a better attended meeting.
  • Barbara has a contact at Anschutz regarding our support of the Global Scholar program. This will help us get any future gifts to them in a prompt manner.

Program - 10/13
Dr. Marny Eulberg
Polio Project Update

Barbara introduced Rotarian & Dr. Marny Eulberg, Rotary Polio Plus expert and a polio survivor. Her message: "Let's Make Sure We Can Celebrate the End of Polio!"

Marny was district chair of Polio Plus for over 10 years, and she was the Zone Director for PP, covering several southwest states as well.
She reminded us that even though it has taken  41 years to get to this point in polio eradication, it took mankind over 200 years to eliminate smallpox. She also notes that if we stopped the eradication effort today, in 10 years there would be upwards to 200,000 polio cases in recurrence.
As regards ending polio, living in the U.S. gives all of us access to medical care, education, & minimal discrimination. This is not true around the world: People are still contracting the disease. Afghanistan and Pakistan are still home to the virus.
Rotary has accomplished a lot. The number of cases have dropped 99.9%. 400 million are vaccinated each year. Millions of lives saved and almost 21 million are walking. 20 million volunteers have been mobilized. And, a health care infrastructure has been created that will transcend the polio disease.

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
